Chapter Ten

Cassandra

Entering our bedroom had my heart beating like the wings of a hummingbird. At our manor home in New Jersey I would sometimes dream of the time Deo and I had spent together in this room. Now, tonight, for the first time, Draco would join us, completing our union.

The room was more beautiful than I had remembered. The rich red and gold tapestries hung from the stone walls like old friends. The tall four-poster bed was stacked high with pillows, the red velvet duvet smooth and inviting. A large armoire stood against one wall, the wood covered in beautiful carvings. I knew that once opened, the interior would reveal that it was filled with those floral dresses Deo had referred to, each one fashioned of some soft, flowy fabric. Tucked inside the drawers were piles of lace, silk, and satin lingerie that was meant far more to enhance a woman’s feminine attributes than to provide a modest covering of breasts or ass. The memory of how Deo’s eyes had glazed over when I’d stood before him in nothing more than a lacy bra that barely covered my nipples and a matching thong that purposefully left both cheeks of my ass exposed had my body begin to heat.

Perhaps my mates would believe that the sudden flush I felt coursing through me was due to the flames that were dancing around the logs burning brightly in the fireplace. Alekos must have snuck up here and built us this welcoming fire.

And the familiar chair in the corner. I gulped as my eyes roved over the armless, ornate chair Deo had built specifically for punishing me. Over his knee. I had visited that chair several times during our previous stay at the castle.

Leaving my men at the door, I walked across the floor to my favorite part of the room. The waning sunlight shone through the window, refracting through the bevels of the leaded glass transom. The prisms caused bands of colors to play around the room, lending one’s thoughts to magic rather than science. Beneath the transom was a wide expanse of spotless glass that overlooked the long gravel drive, the gatehouse, and the high stone wall that surrounded Ravensloft, defining our little kingdom. When curled up on the padded bench, you could see the archway we’d driven under, the two copper-topped turrets standing proudly.

I felt one warm hand on each of my shoulders, my mates joining me at the window.

“It is so beautiful, so secluded here,” I said softly, my fingertip reaching out to touch the glass. “When I first saw Ravensloft, stood in this room, it was so easy to imagine myself as a princess, safe in her tower, but now”—I paused, reaching out to run press my palm against the glass—“I’ve seen evil, know that no place is truly safe… that I’m the reason why we can’t stay together; why I must go…” My voice broke as the truth of what was to come made my entire being ache.

“But
